Update to STINGAR Platform announced

Chapel Hill, N.C., April 7, 2025 – Forewarned Inc. announces an updated version of the successful STINGAR platform.

The STINGAR v2.1 version is a significant redesign of the platform which improves the capture, analysis and maintenance of threat intelligence data for Higher Education and Research networks. The latest version of the STINGAR platform incorporates feedback from our 80+ partners collected over the past 3 years since the release of the V2 platform and adds a number of new features which simplify the management of real time threat intelligence data.

The STINGAR Version 2.1 platform contains the following updates:

  • New UI – built with the latest software technology incorporating several new features:
    • Improved Honeypot deployment and lifecycle management & maintenance.
    • Improved visibility of threat data with a new dashboard, attack severity level indicator and enhanced enrichment.
    • Improved threat data management simplifying overall maintenance of the platform.
  • Updated documentation and FAQ’s.
  • Updated Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) Compliance – all docker images built with support for both ARM & Intel/AMD based architectures, with clean software dependency provenance.

The update is free to all existing licensees of the STINGARv2 platform and requires a simple process taking only a few minutes to download and install the newest version. This brings the platform into SBOM provenance compliance for all components and will simplify the process for future updates and compliance.

The platform will continue to be updated with new features and bug fixes into the future. Also, look for a major new release of a cloud native version of STINGAR coming in summer 2025.

STINGAR v2 Released

Major new release of successful STINGAR Shared Threat Intelligence Platform

June 21, 2022 – The STINGAR V2 version is a major redesign of the platform and simplifies the deployment and management of threat intelligence gathering for university & enterprise networks.

This latest version of the STINGAR platform enables organizations of all sizes to deploy sensors on their networks and benefit from the live threat intelligence feed created by STINGAR partners across the country thereby improving the overall security and resilience of all networks.

About STINGAR

The STINGAR (Shared Threat Intelligence, Network Gatekeeper, Automated Response) platform was originally developed by Duke’s Information Technology Security Office as part of its overall IT security strategy to address malicious cyber-attacks seen inside its network. STINGAR provides a low cost way to improve the utilization your existing security infrastructure.

STINGAR automatically detects and blocks cyber-attacks as they happen, in real-time, thus removing threats from the network and reducing work for the IT security teams. STINGAR increases the blocking capabilities BY UP TO TWO ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE from malicious connection attempts. By deploying sensors on their own networks, STINGAR partners capture more detailed, more relevant & more timely threat intelligence resulting in major improvements in blocking effectiveness at the network edge.

“The latest version of the STINGAR platform incorporates user feedback we have collected over the past 5 years since the original deployment of the platform and adds a range of new features. It represents a major upgrade of the product and is the culmination of over 2 years of development by Duke University IT Office” – Richard Biever, CISO Duke University.

The V2 version of STINGAR provides an easy-to-use web dashboard interface which simplifies the collection and management of threat intelligence and provides new tools for threat visualization, identification and more detailed logs for threat hunting.

The installation process has also been simplified, with help from automated installation scripts and supporting documentation. Once installation is completed, typically in under an hour, STINGAR requires little to no regular maintenance and simply runs and blocks network attacks continuously while collecting threat intelligence data and sharing with the community.

Growing the community of users.

“A major goal for the new version was the simplification of the overall administration and management of the STINGAR platform. Historically, STINGAR has been used at larger Higher Education Research institutions with fully staffed security operations teams. The new version has been designed to be deployed by more modest IT departments who may only consist of a few staff members that manage all aspects of their IT infrastructure. We plan to expand the STINGAR community and will be offering the new version to community colleges, state and local government offices and high schools.” – Hugh Thomas, CEO Forewarned, Inc.

As a software solution, requiring only minimal compute resources, STINGAR offers a low cost, highly effective platform to improve the overall security and resilience of enterprise networks. Any enterprise that already utilizes a firewall as part of their network infrastructure can benefit from installing STINGAR on their network.

Duke University Launches Cybersecurity Company, Forewarned, Inc. to support and promote STINGAR

Duke University Launches Cybersecurity Company, Forewarned, Inc.

Durham, N.C., May 2, 2022 – Duke University announces a new cybersecurity technology spin-out, Forewarned, Inc., based on the successful STINGAR platform developed at Duke’s Information Technology Security Office.

The new company, Forewarned Inc., has been granted an exclusive license to the STINGAR software technology and patents. The company plans to continue developing the STINGAR technology and promote it to a broader set of customers in education, research, and beyond.

“In 2021, Duke decided it was the right time to expand the availability of the platform and spin out the new company, Forewarned, Inc.,” said Robin Rasor, Associate VP, Duke Office for Translation and Commercialization. “The goal is to promote the platform and bring it to a broader set of customers so more entities, not just academic institutions, could benefit from sharing real-time threat information and greater network security.”

STINGAR Platform

The STINGAR (Shared Threat Intelligence, Network Gatekeeper, Automated Response) platform was originally developed by Duke’s Information Technology Security Office as part of its overall IT security strategy to address malicious cyber-attacks seen inside its network.

STINGAR automatically detects and blocks cyber-attacks as they happen, in real-time, thus removing threats from the network and reducing work for the security incident response teams. STINGAR increases the blocking capabilities by two orders of magnitude from malicious connection attempts. In addition, the platform also shares cyber threat intelligence with its community of trusted users to make everyone aware of the active cyber threats and become better prepared against attacks.

“STINGAR began life as an internal project inside Duke’s IT security operations team to address the lack of commercial offerings in this space,” said Tracy Futhey, Vice President and CTO of Duke Office of Information Technology. “It has grown to become a widely adopted security automation tool in use across the country at higher education campuses, government research establishments and security operations centers. I am delighted to see the completion of this effort with the launch of this new company. I encourage all members of the higher education community to consider the benefits of STINGAR for the protection of their campus networks.”

“We have recently begun the transition of our existing partners to the latest version of the STINGAR platform, which represents a major upgrade culminating two years of development work,” said Hugh Thomas, Forewarned, Inc. CEO. “We look forward to welcoming new partners to the STINGAR community over the coming months and years.”
